Denton County Wildlife Education: Skunk poop vs Raccoon poop

Due to their ever-dwindling habitat, many wild animals have become almost as comfortable in cities as we are. They have found a way to adapt to the food and living conditions that are vastly different than what they are accustomed to. There are numerous critters that seek refuge in the homes and gardens of people. This can make it difficult to identify exactly what kind of animal you are dealing with. The most convenient way of getting these pests to leave your property is to find a wildlife removal expert. However, in order for them to perform their job properly, they will need to know what they are dealing with. One of the most bothersome things to deal with is the feces found in your garden. This attracts insects and leaves you with a mess to clean up.

Skunk feces
Depending on what kind of food is available in their environment skunk feces will typically contain berries, seeds, feathers and whatever else they have been ingesting. The similarity to cat feces makes it harder to identify. However, skunk feces will be found on the grass while cats usually cover theirs with sand. It is about two inches long and about half an inch in diameter.

Raccoon feces
Raccoon feces resemble skunk feces in shape but it is usually larger in size. It is around three inches long and half an inch in diameter. It is also darker in color than skunk feces. Raccoons routinely use a communal spot to defecate. You will find numerous piles of feces under trees, woodpiles, tree stumps and even on patios or decks.

Dangers of animal feces
It is under no circumstances a pleasant task to get rid of animal feces. It is, however, of vital importance as various diseases are spread by animal droppings.
• Skunk droppings are the less dangerous of the two. They can spread listeriosis and leptospirosis to anyone who comes into contact with it. Pets are exposed to canine hepatitis, canine distemper, and Feline Panleukopenia.
• Raccoon feces contains roundworm eggs. This is as bad as it sounds. It is terribly hazardous to the health of humans and other animals. It is extremely urgent to eliminate it from your garden before your children come into contact with it. They are less prone to washing their hands, and the eggs might make their way into their mouths.

Cleaning up
If you do spot animal feces in your yard it is important to clean it as soon as possible. Implement the necessary precautions before cleaning it
· Wear protective gloves and eyewear. The dust from dry feces can enter your eyes and even your respiratory system. If possible wear a mask too.
· Carefully place it in a plastic bag and seal it tightly. If possible place it in more than one bag.
· Do not throw it in your normal refuse bin.
· Spray the area with an antibacterial solution after you have removed all traces of feces.
· Wash your hands carefully when done
